Matched “face” pieces feature photographs of objects found at the seashore and on the streets of New York, that can be arranged to create expressive faces. Create a near-endless cast of characters from printed images of leaves, ribbons, coins, and a variety of other found objects.
By engaging in this activity, children develop the ability to identify and express characteristics of human emotion through facial expressions they create using the pieces. This is an especially helpful process for children who struggle to relate to emotion in others, or who have difficulty expressing their own feelings.
This gem is one that preschool students love to explore.
There are four stacks of double-sided cards, each with a different facial feature—hair, eyes, nose and mouth. But the beauty of the features are they are created from “found” materials.
You might have beads or bottle caps for the eyes, a mass of cassette tape for hair, a paperclip nose and a pencil mouth. Create faces and discuss how the character might be feeling.
Discuss what kind of situation might make the character feel that way.
